Baggage and Security

Security Procedures

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) handles all of the baggage and passenger screening at Augusta Regional Airport. We are eager to help passengers prepare to travel through the airport, especially in light of recent changes. A passenger who knows how to pack and what to wear is going to help keep the lines moving without delay.

Baggage Screening

You should arrive at the airport at least one hour prior to your flight departure. Check in with the airline first. After the airline has checked you in, you will take your bags to TSA-right there in the lobby – for baggage screening. Once your bags are checked, TSA will give them to the airline. It is important that you do not lock your bags.
If you have questions regarding baggage limits or size, please contact the airlines directly as the rules vary from carrier to carrier.

Passenger Screening

At the passenger security checkpoint, you will place all carry-on baggage and any items you are carrying with you on the belt of the X-ray machine. You will need to lay all items flat. Just remember “IN-OUT-OFF”!

  • Place all metal items IN your carry-on baggage before you reach the front of the line.
  • Take your computer OUT of its carrying case and place it in one of the bins provided.
  • Take OFF your outer coat or jacket so that it can go through the X-ray machine (you do not need to remove your suit jacket, sport coat, or blazer unless you are asked to do so by one of the passenger screeners).

Time Saving Tips

Following these tips will help you reduce your wait time at the security checkpoint.

Before the Airport

  • Do NOT pack or bring prohibited items to the airport. Visit TSATravelTips for a complete list.
  • Leave gifts unwrapped. They may be opened for inspection.
  • Avoid wearing clothing, jewelry, and accessories that contain metal. Metal items may set off the alarm on the metal detector.
  • Put all undeveloped film and cameras with film in your carry-on baggage. Checked baggage screening equipment will damage undeveloped film.
  • Carry-on baggage is limited to one carry-on bag plus one personal item. Personal items include laptops, purses, small backpacks, briefcases, or camera cases. Remember, 1+1.
  • Place identification tags in and on all of your baggage. Don’t forget your laptop computer.

At the Airport

Before you get in line…

  • Do NOT bring drinks to the security checkpoint.
  • Do NOT bring food to the security checkpoint unless it is wrapped or in a container. Unpeeled natural foods like fruit are okay.

Once you get in line…In, Out, Off

  • Put metal IN your carry-on bag. This includes jewelry, loose change, keys, mobile phones, pagers, and personal data assistants (PDAs).
  • Take OUT your laptop computer. Place it in a bin, separate from its carrying case.
  • Take OFF your outer coat. Place it in a bin. Suit jackets and blazers do not have to be removed, unless requested by the screener.
